MAC Cosmetics - History, Products, Kits and Endorsements
MAC Cosmetics, the name of which is derived from the company's full name of Make-up Artists Cosmetics, is a Canadian manufacturer of cosmetic products. The company is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.
History of MAC Cosmetics
MAC Cosmetics was founded in 1985 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. As the full name implies, the company's original intention was to supply products only to professional make-up artists, a role which it fulfilled in its early years. The late eighties saw MAC make the transition to retail sales, with stores opening in Toronto and surrounding cities. The company did not expand into neighbouring United States until 1991 when they opened their first US store in Greenwich Village, New York City. Despite the founders original intentions of only supplying those in the trade, retail sales now form a large part of their turnover.
Frank Angelo was the marketing director and was responsible the rapid growth of the company, as well as their striking marketing campaigns. After many successful years of continued growth, 1994 saw the Estée Lauder Company acquire a controlling interest in MAC Cosmetics, with complete acquisition of the company following in 1998.
Products
The company's products encompass the whole range of beauty-related items and include eye products such as make-up and false lashes, lipstick and lip gloss, skincare (including removers, moisturizers and solutions), nail products and general accessories.
MAC Cosmetics Kits
MAC is renowned for producing kits that surround each category of products, such as eye kits, face kits, etc. Each MAC face kit for example is designed to create a certain look and is titled accordingly with names such as ‘Girl Next Door' or ‘Rocker Chick'. The cosmetics kits often come with free MAC Cosmetics accessories such as a tote bag or matching case.
MAC Endorsements
MAC has entered into various high profile endorsements over recent years. The latest is with Warner Bros. where MAC Cosmetics will join forces with the world famous studio by bringing to market a Wonder Woman makeup collection that will be available in stores sometime during in spring 2011. The DC Comics' characters collection will include blush, eyeliner, eye shadow, lip gloss, lipstick, mascara and nail polish amongst other exciting MAC stuff.
Other notable endorsements are the MAC Hello Kitty range of cosmetics with very bright and playful packaging that is designed to appeal to the younger buyer of make-up products.
MAC PRO
In line with the company's original intent of creating and supplying cosmetic stuff only to professionals, the MAC PRO program was created in order to provide to cosmetics professionals throughout the industry with advice and products. In order to join the MAC PRO program, each membership application is required to be accompanied by two forms of professional identification in order to validate the individuals' professional status. Once they have become a member of the scheme, cosmetics professionals as well as students are eligible to receive discounts on MAC purchases.
Social initiatives
MAC has several social initiative programs in place, designed to give something back to the communities. Perhaps their most prominent is the MAC AIDS Fund which was created to support organizations that provide direct services to people with AIDS.
MAC gives 100% of the sales revenue of its VIVA GLAM lipstick products direct to the fund. This means that in the fifteen years the fund has been established the company has raised over 150 million USD for the campaign just through sales of VIVA GLAM lipstick. The money raised is helping efforts in over 67 countries around the world and is used for programs that operate in underserved regions that are often overlooked by other charities or government sponsored initiatives.
