Play Violin Verses Other Instruments

Deciding to play the violin can be a complicated decision. Yet for those who have a passion for this beautiful melodic instrument, it is a choice that can enrich your life and open many doors of opportunity. But how do you come to the place of knowing that the violin is the instrument for you?

Comparing Instruments Within an orchestra, there are different families of instruments. The woodwind instruments include reed instruments such as the clarinet and oboe, and other non reed instruments like the flute and piccolo. These instruments are very melodic and tend to play lines that rise above the main sections of sound in the orchestra.

The timpani section not only includes the great big kettledrums, but instruments like the glockenspiel, xylophone and cymbals. Usually there is only one or two players at most for a timpani section in an orchestra. Playing timpani therefore offers a musician a wide variety of instruments to master. A strong feel for rhythm may also be a drawing towards these instruments.

The brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, and the tuba. They require a lot of lungpower but are a good choice for people who like to stand out from the crowd as the sound of brass instruments cannot be hidden. The sound of a brass instrument is bold and commanding. They may play a lot of harmonies to the main melody and usually blocks of chords are distributed between the brass. The lines of music may not always be exciting for brass but essential for the overall feel of the music.

Finally of course, there is the string section, which comprises first and second violinists (who play different parts on the score) first and second violas, which is a slightly larger instrument than the violin and plays at a lower pitch, first and second cellos, and the double bass. Anyone who has learned electric bass may be surprised to find the fingering is exactly the same for the classical double bass instrument.

Attending Concerts

The best way to really decide if you want to play violin or another instrument is to attend an orchestral concert. This will give you a good exposure to all the different instruments in the orchestra. The most important thing to do is to let the music touch your emotions and see which instrument stands out from the crowd for you. Is it the haunting oboe line? The crash of the cymbals? If you find yourself on the edge of your seat every time the violins burst into life, then learning to play violin may definitely be the instrument for you.

The Allure of the Violin

Although learning the violin may involve some initial discomfort, as learning to hold the violin is not a natural position, the violin is a nice light instrument to hold. It requires some dexterity and a good ear for intonation, but it offers a very rewarding musical experience. The violin is very melodic and can rise above other instrument such as the brass, which may simply play notes in underlying chords. If you like to stand out and hum a melody, the violin is the perfect choice. Having dexterity in both left and right hands is also a benefit as playing violin requires coordination of both. Therefore, pianists may easily transition to the violin as a secondary instrument. Also, if you love to "sing" but don't have a good singing voice, consider learning to play the violin as it will give you the same satisfaction.
