Smoking Pipes - Works Of Art

Smoking pipes have become a trendy item as baby boomers age into their senior years.  While the politically correct thing to do is to cut down on cigarette smoking, more and more tobacco aficionados are finding they still long for the sweet scent of an intoxicating puff or two.  Thus, the trend towards pipe smoking has increased.

For connoisseurs that want to become a member of this elite club of posh pipe smokers, understanding the basics is elemental.  A typical pipe usually has what is called a bit, which is the mouthpiece.  This is followed by the shank, which is a thinly shaped stem.  The shank connects to the bowl, which is the chamber where the tobacco is placed.  Today's pipes can range from a basic bowl and bit, to an intricately carved masterpiece.  Huge varieties of different woods are used to carve pipe bowls from.  These woods include, but are not limited to oak, maple, mesquite, cherry wood, bogwood, and olive wood.  Some are more common than others, thus making for a large difference in price depending upon the rarity of the material used.  More commonly, pipe bowls are made from clay, briar, or even corncob.  On occasion, pipes can also be made of soapstone or graphite.  The rarer that a bowl is the greater chance the pipe has of actually becoming a collector's piece.  Possessing intricately carved pipes has become a status symbol of sorts.  Often it is the pipe that owns you though, and not the other way around.

The mystique of owning a variety of decadent smoking pipes is only added to by the choice of tobacco used.  The rarer a tobacco is the more prestigious it appears.  Available in everything from a standard variety to spiced or even flavored options, pipe tobacco is a world unto itself.  From North American blends to varieties from far off lands, a pipe tobacco deserves to be savored.  Special effort is made when creating the intricate nuances of an aromatic blend.  North American tobaccos can come from states like Louisiana or Virginia, while International blends can come from places like South America, Syria, India, or even Africa.  Even for non-smokers, the sweet scent of a fine tobacco can be quite intoxicating with an air of mystery.  It is no wonder that this trend has continued to catch on.  As male baby boomers continue to age, the desire to add to their male mystique is part and parcel of their penchant for pipes.  Nothing says debonair like a well-dressed fellow relaxing in his favorite chair while he leisurely enjoys an aromatic tobacco.

Smoking pipes definitely appear to be a trend that is here to stay.  As each pipe is acquired, a collector is born.  Just like smoking, the aromatic tobacco can become an addiction, so can the collecting of intricately detailed pipes.  They truly are works of art.
