Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch -- Can It Void Your Warranty?

If you're looking for a sliding fifth wheel hitch for your short bed truck, you might think it's the perfect solution for your truck/5th wheel set-up. Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks that might give you cause for concern.

When sliding fifth wheel hitches, like the Sidewinder, first came onto the market most RVers thought it was the perfect option for people who own a short bed truck but wanted to attach and pull a fifth wheel. With a shorter bed, there is less clearance between the nose of the RV and the back of the cab. When you turn – especially a tight turn –  you are going to make contact between the RV and your cab. Both can suffer extensive damage. Before sliding hitches, your only other option was to attach the fifth wheel farther back in the bed of the truck. This creates a very unstable situation with the pin weight sitting behind the back axle.

All RV experts agree: you should never play around with the position of the pin weight!

So what's the problem with sliding hitches or the Sidewinder Hitch?

At first glance, using a sliding hitch seems like a perfect solution for a short bed truck. But upon closer examination, you may not want to go this route either. The way a normal fifth wheel hitch plate works is changed when you add the sliding hitch. Instead of turning freely at the base of the plate, it locks it into place and then transfers the right and left turning where it meets the nose of 5th wheel. The RV was not designed for this. Many popular RV manufactures are now voiding warranties when customers use a sliding hitch because of the clear potential for damage.

What about other options for short bed truck and fifth wheel combinations?

RV and safety experts are now recommending drop-axle or auxiliary axles for pulling a fifth wheel. Based on the drop axles big rigs have used for decades, there are some exciting products designed just for pick-up trucks, full-size SUVs and vans. The clear leader in the field is the Automated Safety Hitch, which has the added benefit of including heavy duty brakes, a two-ton axle and automated attaching and detaching. It extends the length of your truck, which is an added safety benefit, and then takes the pin weight of the RV using a standard fifth wheel hitch. You can read more about this new alternative to sliding hitches here.
