The Different Uses and Properties of Copper

Copper was one of the very first metals ever extracted and used by humans. Since the dawn of civilization, copper has made vital contributions to improving and sustaining society. Copper is used for various purposes because the metal is easily stretched, molded, and shaped; is resistant to corrosion; and conducts heat and electricity efficiently. As a result, the metal has been important to humans ever since. Today, copper is used in buildings, the construction industry, power generation and transmission, manufacturing, and the production of industrial machinery and transportation vehicles. Copper wiring and plumbing are also vital to appliances, heating and cooling systems, and telecommunication systems used every day in homes and businesses. Copper is also an integral component in motors, wiring, radiators, connectors, brakes, and bearings used in cars and trucks. Copper has excellent alloying properties that make it invaluable when combined with other metals. For instance, copper combines with zinc (to form brass), tin (to form bronze), or nickel. These alloys have excellent characteristics and are developed for highly specialized functions. For example, a copper–nickel alloy is applied to the hulls of ships because it does not corrode in seawater, reducing drag and increasing fuel efficiency. Brass (the copper and zinc alloy) is also more malleable and has better acoustic properties than that either pure copper or zinc. The result is that brass is frequently used in a variety of musical instruments, such as trumpets, trombones, bells, cymbals, and many others. As mentioned, the metal is also highly malleable and can be formed into a copper sheet ,with varying thickness. A copper sheet is extremely corrosion resistant and also has a diverse range of applications, from the home to the industries, because of its unique properties. Copper sheet metals are easy to form into complex shapes. Copper is also totally recyclable. Only a fraction of the Earth's reserves have been mined, making the metal sustainable. Copper also has natural anti–bacterial properties. The growth of bacteria in a copper sheet is greatly slowed and the population density of bacteria in it is significantly lower than in other metals like stainless steel. This makes the metal an excellent addition to any home, for use on table tops or surfaces in kitchens. Hospitals can also benefit from copper for additional defense against infections.
